A popular procedure done in our North Shore, Illinois, office by Dr. Anil Shah is the Deep Neck Lift or 5 Layer Neck.
A Neck Lift is a type of facelift performed when liposuction is not enough to contour the neck and there is need to work on deeper structures. Dr. Shah performs on patients what he calls the 5 Layer Neck, referring to the 5 layers of the neck: subcutaneous fat, platysma muscle, deep fat, anterior belly of digastric muscle, and submandibular gland excess.
This technique requires an advanced anatomy knowledge of the neck. While most surgeons ignore this area for the most part, Dr. Shah has written three landmark articles on facial anatomy and still teaches anatomy courses at the University of Chicago.

WHAT IS A NECK LIFT PROCEDURE?
A neck lift is a surgical cosmetic procedure aimed at improving the appearance of the neck and jawline. It addresses concerns such as sagging skin, excess fat, and muscle laxity in the neck area.
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A NECK LIFT PROCEDURE?
Ideal candidates for a neck lift are individuals who are bothered by the appearance of sagging neck skin, excess fat, or loose neck muscles. Generally, candidates should be in good overall health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the results.
WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM A NECK LIFT?
A neck lift can lead to a more defined jawline, reduced appearance of jowls, and a smoother neck contour. However, the specific results may vary depending on individual factors and the extent of the procedure performed.
IS A NECK LIFT PAINFUL?
Neck lift surgery is typically performed under anesthesia, ensuring that patients do not feel any pain during the procedure. However, some discomfort and swelling can be expected during the recovery period.
HOW LING IS THE RECOVERY TIME AFTER A NECK LIFT PROCEDURE?
Recovery time can vary depending on the extent of the procedure and individual healing capacity. Generally, patients can expect some swelling and bruising for the first week or two. Most individuals can return to work and resume light activities within 1-2 weeks, but it may take several weeks for the swelling to fully subside.
ARE THERE ANY RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH NECK LIFT SURGERY?
As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications, although they are generally rare when performed by an experienced surgeon. Some risks may include infection, scarring, nerve injury, and unsatisfactory aesthetic outcomes.
WILL THERE BE VISIBLE SCARS AFTER A NECK LIFT?
The location and extent of scarring will depend on the surgical technique used. A skilled surgeon will aim to place incisions in inconspicuous areas, such as behind the ears or under the chin, to minimize visible scarring.
HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS OF A NECK LIFT LAST?
The results of a neck lift are long-lasting, but they are not permanent. The aging process will continue, and lifestyle factors can impact how long the results remain noticeable. Generally, a neck lift can offer a rejuvenated appearance for many years.
HOW CAN I MAINTAIN THE RESULTS OF MY NECK LIFT?
To prolong the results of a neck lift, it’s essential to follow your surgeon’s aftercare instructions, adopt a healthy lifestyle, and protect your skin from sun exposure. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and skincare can contribute to maintaining a youthful appearance.
